Smartlead is purpose-built for cold email at scale. Here's what that actually means when you pay for it.
Smartlead's core pitch is simple: unlimited email accounts and unlimited warmup on every plan, no per-mailbox fees. For agencies running 20+ client domains or SDR teams managing dozens of inboxes, this pricing model removes the biggest cost that competitors hide in add-ons. The sequencing engine is solid, the unified master inbox pulls its weight, and the API is one of the better ones in this category. The trade-off: it's a sending and sequencing layer, not a full sales stack — no native CRM, no LinkedIn outreach, and no blacklist monitoring unless you add SmartDelivery separately.
| Plan | Price | Sends/mo | Contacts | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | $39 | 6,000 | 2,000 | Unlimited mailboxes, unlimited warmup. Fine for solo SDRs testing the tool. |
| Pro | $94 | 90,000 | 30,000 | Adds CRM access. The real starting point for growth-stage outbound. |
| Unlimited Smart ⭐ | $174 | 150,000 | Unlimited | Unlimited contacts is the unlocking feature here. No CSV size anxiety. |
| Unlimited Prime | $379 | 500,000 | Unlimited | Adds dedicated manager, private Slack, 3+ client workspaces included. |
Annual billing saves 17%. Agency whitelabel: $29/workspace/month (Pro and above). SmartServers: $39/server/month for dedicated IPs. Read our full Smartlead review →
The unlimited mailbox claim holds up — we connected 35 inboxes across 4 domains on the $94 Pro plan with no upsell. Warmup ran automatically across all of them within 48 hours of connection. The sequence builder supports conditional branches and subsequences (if replied → move to nurture sequence), which most tools at this price point don't offer. The master inbox consolidates replies from all mailboxes into a single view — especially useful when running multiple client accounts.
Where we noticed friction: the lead database (SmartProspect) is a separate add-on and costs extra — unlike Instantly where it's bundled. Blacklist monitoring is also absent from the base platform; you need the SmartDelivery add-on ($49–$599/mo) to get inbox placement data. For pure sending infrastructure, Smartlead is hard to beat on per-dollar value. For an all-in-one system, it's more of a builder platform.
Instantly has grown from a simple cold email sender into a full outreach stack. The question is whether you actually need all of it.
Instantly started as a clean, fast cold email sender and has since added a B2B lead database (450M+ contacts), AI sales and reply agents, a built-in CRM, and website visitor identification. The result is a capable all-in-one platform — if you want to buy everything from one vendor. The complication: Instantly now sells Outreach plans, Credits plans (for leads), and Bundles separately, and the pricing matrix takes real effort to decode. Understand what you're buying before you sign up.
| Plan Type | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Outreach — Growth | $47 | Unlimited accounts, warmup, 5K sends/mo, 1K contacts. Sending only. |
| Outreach — Hypergrowth | $97 | 100K sends/mo, 25K contacts. Unibox included. |
| Credits — Growth | $47 | 1,500–2,000 credits/mo for the 450M+ lead database. Separate from outreach. |
| Bundle — Scale ⭐ | $194 | Outreach + Credits + AI Reply Agent + Unibox + premium support. Most complete option. |
| Bundle — Agency | $555 | 500K sends, 100K contacts, 10K credits, SISR private IP system. |
Watch out: the $47 outreach plan doesn't include lead data. Getting full functionality (sending + leads + AI) requires either the Bundle plans or stacking multiple subscriptions. Annual billing saves ~10%. Read our full Instantly review →
The deliverability foundation is strong. Unlimited email accounts and warmup work as advertised. The AI Sales Agent (available on Scale+ bundles) can draft replies, handle objections, and move conversations forward — it does real work for teams without a full SDR staff. The lead database search is good with 13 filters including job posting signals, funding rounds, and technology stack — better prospecting intent signals than most competitors.
The friction: the pricing architecture is confusing by design. Someone starting at $47 will quickly hit the 5,000 email limit and realize they need to upgrade. The $194 Scale bundle is where Instantly becomes a complete tool, but that's a 4x price jump from the entry tier. Agency features are limited — no whitelabeling, no client workspaces — which is a meaningful gap vs Smartlead if you're building a lead gen agency.
Lemlist is the only tool in this comparison that handles LinkedIn and phone alongside email. That differentiator comes at a price — literally.
Lemlist has the highest G2 score of the three and its user satisfaction is genuine — the product is polished, the personalization features are unique, and the multichannel sequencing is the best in this comparison. The honest problem: per-seat pricing. A 5-person team on the Multichannel Expert plan at $109/seat is paying $545/month before any add-ons. At that price point, you're in enterprise sales engagement territory. If you're a solo sender or a small team doing real multichannel outreach, it can justify itself. For volume-first cold email, it's overpriced.
| Plan | Per Seat | 5 Seats | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email Starter | $39 | $195 | Email sequences, basic personalization, limited database access. |
| Email Pro | $69 | $345 | Full database access, email verification, advanced personalization. |
| Multichannel Expert ⭐ | $109 | $545 | Email + LinkedIn + phone. Dynamic image builder. The actual Lemlist product. |
All prices are per seat per month. Annual billing available. A 5-person team doing multichannel outreach realistically needs the $109/seat plan — budget $545–$650/month total. Pricing satisfaction scores (3.7/5 on G2) are notably lower than overall satisfaction (4.6/5). Read our full Lemlist review →
The dynamic image builder is the feature that makes Lemlist stand out. You can embed a prospect's name, company logo, or LinkedIn photo into a custom image in your email — automatically, at scale. The reply rate lift on personalized images is real; independent tests consistently show 30–50% higher replies vs text-only. If you have a product or service where standing out in inbox matters more than volume, this pays for itself.
The LinkedIn sequencing works through a Chrome extension that automates connection requests, profile visits, and direct messages as part of the same sequence. This is meaningful — coordinating email and LinkedIn touchpoints in one workflow is something the other tools simply can't do. The 450M+ contact database is included on all plans, which is a genuine edge over Smartlead where it's an add-on.
The hard truth: if your goal is to send 50,000 cold emails per month across 30 mailboxes, Lemlist is the wrong tool. Per-seat pricing makes no sense for infrastructure-heavy cold email. Lemlist is the right choice when quality per touch matters more than volume — specific accounts, multichannel sequences, senior-level personalization.
Three good tools, no filler. The right answer depends on one question: are you optimizing for volume, all-in-one simplicity, or multichannel quality?
You run multiple domains, manage client accounts, or send at serious volume. The unlimited mailboxes + warmup pricing model means your costs don't scale with infrastructure — only with your actual sends. Add whitelabel workspaces for $29/client.
You want leads + sending + AI in one platform and you don't need client workspaces. Budget for the $194 Scale bundle — that's where the product actually delivers. The AI agents and lead database are the real value.
You're targeting 50–200 high-value accounts per month where a personalized image in the subject line can mean the difference between a reply and a delete. Per-seat pricing is painful but the multichannel sequences are worth it if your deal size supports it.
Running a lead gen agency with 5+ clients → Smartlead Pro ($94). Solo founder or small team doing 10–30K emails/mo → Instantly Scale ($194). High-ticket B2B targeting specific named accounts with LinkedIn → Lemlist Multichannel ($109/seat). Comparing cost at 100K emails/mo: Smartlead $174 vs Instantly $194 vs Lemlist $545+ for a 5-person team.
Per-seat tools look cheap for one person. Drag the slider to your real team size and watch the gap open up.
